Blog #6: 人狼ゲーム ロストエデン

 

Recently started to rewatch the 人狼ゲーム (Werewolf Game) series! The plot is essentially a group of high schoolers get kidnapped and placed within a building— all forced to play: "Werewolf Game." The game itself is very similar to the American game, Mafia. The rules are simple:

All players are divided into two teams: the townsfolk (some of them having special roles) and the werewolves. The townsfolk's aim is to uncover and eliminate all werewolves, while the werewolves' aim is to stay undiscovered and eliminate all townspeople. The game follows a day-night cycle and is structured as follows: 

During the night, all players have to stay within their room and the werewolves wake up. The wolves then decide on which townsperson to kill; townspeople with special roles will also be called out in order to use their respective abilities. Once the day comes back, all players regroup, discover the victim and try to unmask the werewolves. The werewolves must avoid being uncovered by redirecting the suspicions onto someone else. Once the debate ends, each player points at the person they think is a werewolf. The player with the majority of the votes is then executed. The game ends if the townspeople voted out all the wolves (Townspeople Win), or the werewolves got rid of enough people that the #Werewolves = #Townspeople (Werewolves Win) 

Some townspeople have special roles such as:

Fortune Teller - At night, able to check an individual's role; goal is to find the werewolves

Guard - At night, has the ability to protect an individual; goal is to protect fortune teller to help townspeople win

Depending on the series, there's other special roles such as:

Cupid - Chooses two individuals as a couple. Cupid and the couple are their own group and regardless of the couple's role (ie. ordinary townspeople x werewolf, or fortune teller x werewolf, or townspeople x townspeople). If the couple lives to the end, then cupid's group wins; if one of the couple dies, cupid dies as well

Fox - Fox is their own group. When the game ends, if fox is still alive, then fox wins. If fortune teller found out fox's role, fox automatically dies

Manic - On the werewolves' side. No special abilities aside from the fact that as a townspeople, they want the werewolves to win and if werewolves win, they win as well 

 

This is a very interesting series of show + movies just because unlike the ordinary game, these students will die if they were voted out or chosen by the werewolves as their next victim. This creates real stakes in the game and everyone is trying to live to the very end, creating a lot of psychological warfare! You can't really trust anyone because everyone will say they're a townspeople and because everyone wants to live, many will falsely assume the role of Fortune Teller in hopes of the Guard protecting them. The real Fortune Teller also might not admit they are the fortune teller because they don't want to be the wolves' target. Like I said, a LOT of psychological warfare— highly recommend!!!
